The first compilation of its kind, Cambodian Rocks was responsible for introducing the flamboyant sounds of Cambodian rock and roll to Western ears. The record was compiled by Paul Wheeler, an American tourist, from cassettes he found in Phnom Penh. It was first released in 1995 without a tracklisting and it took 12 years before the tracks were properly IDed by international digger, Giles Peterson. Original vinyl copies of these recordings are among the most difficult records in world to source due to the destructive influence of the Khmer Rouge. Thanks to the WFMU blog for shedding much light on this release.

Listen to the groovin’ rocker, “Chnam oun Dop-Pramp Muy (I’m 16)”, by Ros Sereysothea.
